the parts of your code that have platform are, by definition, exactly the parts that are _not_ portable

Pet peeve: code chock full of is _not_ "portable code". It is, at best, code that's been ported a lot. There's a big difference.

should that leave you with a burning desire to do more localization programming, no worries, there are plenty more languages where those 4 came from, and we haven't seen any of the really hard ones yet

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: get a long list of author names (so proper nouns) chosen from these four languages (and maybe a few more for good measure!) and alphabetize it in a way that makes sense for native speakers of all 4 languages.

French has many diacritics but none of them affect the sort order, they sort as the base letter. French however also has the œ and æ ligatures and those sort as oe and ae, respectively.

Turkish has ç, ğ, ö, ş and ü which are all distinct letters but do all sort right after the Latin letter they resemble.

Swedish has å, ä and ö which are not umlauts but distinct letters and sort in that order at the end of their alphabet. (I.e. x, y, z, å, ä, ö).

Alphabetic sorting fun: in German, the umlauts (ä, ö, ü) are essentially ligatures for ae, oe, ue respectively and sort that way usually, especially for proper nouns, but not necessarily for dictionaries where they often sort as a, o and u.

Video recommendation for me "what's the fastest way to alphabetize your bookshelf?" and just... whoa 1. bookshelf _singular_? 2. what kind of deranged madman arranges their own books alphabetically and not by topic? 3. why worry about efficiency? how often do you plan doing this?

I tell people to stop worrying about futuristic runaway smart AI, because it's stupid current AI that will kill us, this is what I mean. Someone bought a product that *literally* text-matched the word "charity" as 'good' and "vodka" as 'bad' and is making hiring choices with it.

Turns out that when all your tests pass and everything looks good, all you really need to do to stir up some shit is put on your "OK I'm a customer using this" hat and try to use your API as if you didn't know exactly what combinations of features are trouble.

I thought I was "done" for the next release Monday afternoon and have been spending the last few days doing the sort of things you do when you're "done" but not actually done.

    3. Either a lot of people have Chromebooks that they don't want to go to sleep, or there's a lot of people that know how to find and install Browser extensions but don't know how to disable/change sleep time in their OS, or they just prefer the toggle in their browser.
