Anti-housing homeowners have a lot to say about affordability requirements on new housing, but never on existing housing. Why not a 10-20% local tax on the profit of home sales to fund affordable construction & acquisition, to match the % we require of new developments?

In 2017 my landlord raised my rent from $2500 to $2800. I paid $33,600 in rent that year; $4K more than the property taxes on *the entire 4plex*. I was paying $400 less than the 3 other units. My career has been defined by changing jobs to keep up with rent hikes.

In the two years since SB827 was introduced, my partner and I have paid $62,000 in rent. Our landlord has paid a total of $5,362 in property taxes plus $175 for the one time a plumber came (I had to call the plumber.) We need ! Our economy is getting eaten by landowners.

In the two years since SB827 was introduced I've paid $72,000 in rent. My landlords (plural because we were evicted once so that the guy could cash out) have paid a total of $7,353 in property taxes and maybe a few hundred dollars in maintenance.

TLDR, old Stanford professors want to make money off of young Stanford professors by making their housing less affordable and so they took over the residents’ board. (Again, assets of the old are the debts of the young.)

Know any renters who received this? As unlikely as that may be, be sure to arm them with these facts - Prop 13 did not lower their rents:

Older lefty NIMBYs are excited about a Republican taking on , one of the only CA State legislators willing to propose sufficiently large solutions to the housing crisis. I mean, come on, at this point, why not just admit you’re conservative?

"tHeRe iS nO hOuSiNg ShOrTaGe HeRe!" screeches the suburban man paying just $4k per year in property tax on a home worth $1.5M…that he bought for just $150k in 1985…in a city with a 1.5% rental vacancy rate…and average rents of $3,200 per month. 🙃🙃🙃

The Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee made a 2-year bill, meaning he won’t let it come up for a vote this year. It’ll be eligible for a vote in January. While I’m extremely disappointed, I am 100% committed to moving the bill forward. This fight is far from over.
