Ugh: "Hospital, @UofT examine possible uses of alternative medicines" https://www.toronto.com/news-story/5345024-hospital-u-of-t-examine-possible-uses-of-alternative-medicines/ … @SRHHospital @carlyweeks @sharon_kirkey @CBCHealth @DrPChouinard @gorskon via @ryarmst Nothing irritates me more than academic centres legitimizing questionable alternative practices!

Evidence for acupuncture much weaker than often believed, see: http://policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/november-2017/acupuncture-and-the-placebo-problem/ … Indeed, it stands as an example of the legitimization problem. And use for addiction? See https://aim.bmj.com/content/early/2018/07/20/acupmed-2016-011283 … No diff btw "real" and sham acupuncture. When someone is suffering with cancer -Why anyone would want to take relief away from a patient whether it’s drug or placebo induced is a sign the doc is a control freak- not a healer. Be careful doc you are treading on sacred ground here

Not only is prescribing a placebo treatment unethical for a vast number of reasons, but the effect itself is oversold. As an example, the placebo effect as reported in clinical trials consists of a number of non-specific effects that don't occur clinically (various biases).

People Talk shit in ivory towers forgetting that the patients are live human beings. As a cancer survivor & patient I don’t have the luxury of joining you on high. If acupuncture lowers stress levels & blood pressure & helps the patient rest then it helps period.

I agree. If acupuncture lowers stress, blood pressure, and helps patients rest, then it may be an appropriate treatment. It is in those ivory towers, however, where the scientific method is employed to determine if this is the case.

No it’s on the patient on the table. Ivory towers are for discussion. Remember you are talking about living human beings with lives outside your clinic. What you say & do profoundly affects them along with your attitude esp when they deal with an adversary like cancer

That cancer patients use other means to find relief & as long as they aren’t harming themselves you should be supportive b/c it makes them feel better during one of the worst times a person can live through. Integrative therapies help them cope thru a harsh disease & treatments

Anyone is free to seek out any pseudoscience they choose, it just should not be publicly funded and cannot ethically be endorsed by physicians.

This isn’t about you Ryan. It’s funny how you feel insulted about something that’s not about you. It’s about the patients.
