Laura Poitras just received her 3rd Oscar nomination for Best Documentary, for her film about anti-Sackler activism and opioids. A frontrunner to win, it'd be her 2nd Oscar (after CitizenFour). It's hard to find many people with accomplishments that match hers. Congrats, Laura!

Political elites regularly take/improperly handle classified documents. Sandy Berger, Trump, Biden, Hillary Clinton, Petraeus, etc. Compare the consequences of their actions to those of principled whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning, Daniel Hale, Reality Winner, Edward

I spent months speaking with Sabri al-Qurashi, who has suffered from the US “war on terror” for two decades. He’s an innocent Yemeni man who was thrown in #Guantánamo and then dumped in Kazakhstan. His life there is excruciating. Story is here ⬇️

“Had they caught these people before, this guy wouldn’t be a murderer and Elijah Newman would be alive.” Just weeks after riders carjacked Uber driver Brian Blagoue, a Lyft driver was killed in the exact same spot. This might have been prevented.

This latest piece by is absolutely incredible. Not only is Uber slow to respond to law enforcement requests (literally “give out as little information as possible”), they've essentially created their “own justice system.”

"There is no precedent in the United States for prosecuting a publisher of information — as opposed to a spy or a government official who leaked secrets — under the Espionage Act....[it] threatens to undermine America’s First Amendment"
New story by me in The Markup: Political campaigns are using your phone's location data to target you with ads. Experts say these efforts could enable the spread of misinformation and even suppress votes. 🧵1/10

On yet another day when we discuss the plans of billionaires to reshape online media, this obituary is a reminder of the enduring power of an authentically human voice, to delight, subvert, and educate. The web is still here, just as in 2009, to magnify that power.

With their help, I developed the inner resolve I needed to let go of old versions of my workplace and job as new ones emerged. This was another lesson: Amid rapid change you need to be able to let go of old visions of how the world works, even if it feels a little like death.

But I was lucky: my amazingly talented coworkers were also incredibly generous and kind. Amid the turbulence, they were there for me and one another. These people meant more than any ideal that brought me here. Our bonds even more than our beliefs allowed us to accomplish things.

We came with stars in our eyes and ideals in our hearts, and found that change in media was even more relentless than we'd expected. Not just for us; downstairs from Intercept, Gawker Media went from profitable and thriving to bankrupt because a billionaire disliked its reporting

I was recently laid off from The Intercept. Helping build the publication as tech and deputy editor over the past 7.5 years meant so much to me. We moved our family to New York because we believed deeply in the mission. Here's what I learned about following your dream like that:
