        He didn't abandon it completely. This was about allowing testimony from his staff. But he then claimed executive privilege when the existence of the tapes was revealed and were demanded by prosecutors. The US v Nixon case was decided by the SC against Nixon, and that was the end.

        John Dean was already cooperating with prosecutors at the beginning of April, 1973. Dean was fired at the end of the month. The heat was on Nixon by the time the congressional televised hearings started in May. Nixon made a political calculation. But things got more desperate...
