What makes you consider Chromecast a hack, but not Airplay?
AirPlay sure is good. Share the entire Mac screen or as a second monitor, right to the TV. No Chrome/cast hacks needed.

CC doesn't work as well when sharing the whole screen to the TV, and I don't think it can treat the remote display as a separate monitor.
