One follow up question: how much does their preference for moderates have to do with fundraising? My sense (per your prior reporting) is that the establishment prefers candidates who can self-fund or have enough rich friends, who are much more likely to be moderate.

Yeah I was confused about that part. Isn’t that more an effect of having been brought into the party network than an candidate’s prior network? No, because the party-related donations represent a small percentage of overall donations. The DIME database does pattern matching across a huge dataset to estimate ideology, and it works. It's not just party donations.
