It's absurd how far someone can get in the American education system without learning even the basics of Reconstruction.

Nothing I've ever told students seems to amaze them as much as that there were numerous black elected officials in the 19th c. They were taught reconstruction=corruption.
And New Orleans integrated their street cars. There was a fuss for a few days and then people got used to it.
