Had the DCCC, for instance, funded a bunch of mailers letting voters know that Morganelli is anti-choice and a Trump supporter, I’d of course report on it as news but would not criticize it. That would seem entirely reasonable.

There’s some confusion here, lemme try to clear it up: I personally have zero objection in principle to the party intervening in primaries. There are times it is 100% legit. One might even argue that intervening just because you don’t like a candidate diminishes one’s ability to credibly intervene when critically necessary
