You make it sound like you added one word. Lee makes it sound like the crux of the story was radically different. It just doesn’t square.
The word I added, immigrant, I added multiple times and it changed the story in a big way. One word can matter a lot. I didn’t realize I was making a substantive edit.

One thing I’m still unclear on after reading the corrected version is why ICE was attached to this particular investigation. Was there any nexus to immigration or a plan for deportation?

Now you’ve gotten to where I was when I made the error. But ICE does some non-immigration crimes and this appears to have been one.

Some of the confusion may be lie in the agency’s introduction in the story as “ICE, the federal agency tasked with Trump’s program of mass deportation,” rather than eg “ICE, the federal agency which handles customs matters (in addition to its notorious mass deportation program).”

Isn't that the problem? Anyone would have assumed an ICE investigation would be targetting immigrants unless it was specifically clarified in the article.
