Why did you "add immigrant to the top of the story"? What made you do that?
-
-
-
likely because that is what ICE usually deals with and he thought he was making the story easier to understand
-
That's not the reasoning of a professional editor, especially since the story is not about an immigrant, but likely about a suspected felon, which makes ICE's information request sound quite legit. The story itself is bad journalism. Your poor judgement is just the cherry on top
-
It is almost as if he made a mistake

Fang wrote an article that from top to bottom, with or without your immigrant addition, that implies ICE routinely uses Facebook data In reality, it was a criminal investigation. Do you seriously not realize this is still misleading garbage?
-
It's like writing a piece about how the government routinely records phone conversations of citizens & then belatedly adds an update that the person in question was the subject of a criminal investigation & had been wiretapped.
-
The entire piece should be retracted.

That is the most stand-up defense of a reporter’s work by an editor I’ve seen in a while. Thank you.

Thank you for admitting you’re human & make mistakes. Issuing corrections always makes me trust the reporting more. If a news org never issues corrections, it proves they’re lying.
-
The problem is the story generally runs on the front page while the retraction runs on the 6th page. They have to be more accurate.
-
In the old days. Now the story is corrected online & an explanation given at its conclusion.

Ryan, I very much respect you for taking responsibility publicly like this. But there was (is) a lot more wrong with how that story was presented and with how it was corrected. Dara Lind got it right:https://twitter.com/DLind/status/978432990803103745 …

Massive respect for the transparency and clarity. The idea that journalists must be flawless to be valuable is toxic.

Fact is, there are plenty of enemies of The Intercept waiting to pounce at the slightest misstep. That means the Intercept is doing journalist right.
-
This is a terrible take borrowed from people that can’t abide critical thinking.
