My thoughts exactly. Also, why just accept at face value the earlier denial, Ryan?
I talked to people high up in the campaign then and it was clear they were hearing it for the first time. That is the opposite of exonerating. These are important questions to get right but all anybody wants to do is play team sports.

The obvious question is WHY this was the first time they were hearing it - willful ignorance or just general obliviousness? Neither answer reflects well on them. And ofc there's the bigger narrative of being useful idiots, which is still very much in evidence to this day.
