I have no idea, but I know the Intercept has a vested interest in making a local dispute that has some real controversy into Democrats don't like Muslims.

It is no secret lots of Dem leaders think a Muslim candidate is unelectable in Michigan. That’s distinct from personal animus but a very real thing and a factor in what’s happening here.
