Facebook defines political balance as offsetting neutral fact gathering with rightwing propaganda. Which is the goal the conservative movement has been working toward for a generation.https://twitter.com/ryangrim/status/1042781113175957504 …

The head of @Facebook's allegedly independent fact-checking body admits to CJR that Facebook "recommended" they allow The Weekly Standard into their fact check club, even though it didn't meet their standards at the time. This is such a farce. https://www.cjr.org/the_new_gatekeepers/the-weekly-standard-facebook.php?ct=t(Top_Stories_CJR_new_Jan_26_1_25_2017_COPY_01 …) pic.twitter.com/mndq3oztEa

@ryangrim FYI @Mantzarlis has repeatedly disputed Legum’s characterizations of the process by which TWS was admitted

Hey @mathewi could you clarify what I said and what this sentence means please?

That sentence is poorly worded. It's my understanding FB recommended TWS as a partner, based on my interviews with Alexis and others, and the suggestion from one source (not Alexis) was FB did this as a way of achieving political balance

The sentence doesn’t mean that Facebook told Alexios to add TWS for the purpose of satisfying the right. That’s a different source. But come on guys, why else would Facebook recommend them? Their vaunted reporting? Their esteemed reputation? Y’all got played. Own it and fix it.

I am 100% prepared to believe FB recommended TWS because it wanted to appease conservatives. I'm just saying Alexis didn't say that, which is what the sentence you highlighted could be seen as implying

Perhaps. The “which” does separate the sentence. Could clarify it further with a semicolon. Still, Alexios knew exactly why FB was recommending a magazine that was totally unqualified, so I think the sentence is ok. But I’m not a fact checker.

An aside: Of course I'm not disingenuous to Facebook's PR strategies. Zuckerberg specifically singled out TWS in his Washington Post editorial last week for a reason. On the one hand: Hey look, impartial @factchecknet! One the other: Wink wink conservatives. pic.twitter.com/cUTfIlPl0X
