Harris and Carper asked about what to do about the student loan crisis. @KerriHarrisDE: Cancel all student debt and start fresh @TomCarperforDE: I don't have "a magic wand...it would cost a pretty penny." @KerriHarrisDE: We figured out how to bail out Wall Street

Following Bernie's trend of sexy one-liner that lacks actual substance. Wall Street bailout - $32 billion Cost of bailing out all student loans - $1,500 billion

If you're serious, here's the substance: http://www.levyinstitute.org/publications/the-macroeconomic-effects-of-student-debt-cancellation … If you're going to cost out the bailout based on money returned to the treasury, you have to do the same for bailing out students, who will also pay society and the government back in myriad ways. See above.

Student debt is an horrible burden no doubt. Ongoing and the competition to impress 'buyers' is driving up the costs. But the TARP money mostly paid back was critical to keep people in business. Bankers are the easy villain. How about small businesses? They rely on loans.

There are millions of college students and post college students in this country scraping by pinching pennies and needing parental help (including me) imagine if we all had some disposable income to spend at those small businesses to boost the economy?

The bank bailout was a different phenomenon and should be addressed as an entirely different problem. It's a cheap journalism trick to blend them together.

As someone who has been affected by both, and for pretty much any millenial, they can be connected quite easily: the both affect millenials much more than they have ever faced any other generation, including the one Carper is from.

I see that. I just don't think the equivalency helps. Like saying we can pay for health insurance with military budget dollars. It's obvious we can. But it fires up the opposition before it gets to the table. My opinion.

Repeal tax scam tax cut and Bush era tax cuts is a good one. And any argument abt the cost of govt run healthcare without also discussing budget bloat and how no one ever asks if military spending is necessary, is one that is flawed, imo

You are correct for sure about military spending but there's no political will for that. The tax bill could be reversed since it's a windfall with no broad upside. Need some creative sneaky taxes that only affect the selfish too
