One way to reduce selling-out in DC would be to fix the public schools. When Hill staffers start having kids, the clock starts, and you can time how long it takes them to get a job that earns enough to cover private school or move to the burbs...https://twitter.com/SenWarren/status/1030541499463856128 …

Next Tuesday, I’ll be speaking at @PressClubDC about my bold new plan to fundamentally change the way Washington does business. I’ll unveil sweeping anti-corruption legislation to eliminate the influence of money in federal government & ensure it works for working families again. https://twitter.com/PressClubDC/status/1029861559114321922 …

I mean, you could also maybe fix the public schools for everybody because it's the right thing to do. Just a thought.

My first social circle from the 1990s all moved out of NYC as they married and had kids. It absolutely wasn't the schools, though. It was they couldn't find family sized apt (2, 3, 4 bdrm) they could afford. Most didn't WANT to leave.

The cost of living is one of the main reasons people leave the Hill, or never work there at all. Who can afford to live in DC on 40k, which is what many of Warren’s staffers make.

Congressional salaries should go way up, or the public gets what it pays for

Depends, but generally for an entry level staffer it is around $30,000. For context, a one bedroom apartment in DC can easily cost $1,800/month.

I guess that's one way to ensure that the majority of those jobs go to the children of the wealthy and powerful, which only serves to further consolidate influence in a smaller and smaller clique.

A big problem I (and great many others) have with unpaid Hill internships is the system fast tracks the wealthy into power.

Like all unpaid internships everywhere. Which is why they should be abolished. Even paid internships are problematic, because they set the bottom of the pay scale laughably low.

yes... and including stop charterizing, privatizing, corporatizing, and militarizing schools plus demeaning teachers. Minimum wage monitors putting kids in front of computers for on-line classes is not education.

I heard it costs $3500/month for day care for two kids in DC. If that's true, what the actual hecking heck who is cashing in so big

You could also give DC representation and get the city from beneath Congress' thumb.
