We covered Marie Newman closely. Yes, she lost narrowly but way closer than people thought. Not all insurgents have won of course but it’s completely false to say this was a stopped clock being right. Something is happening.
We covered them too. By and large, insurgent candidates were beaten by establishment ones. And Jess King didn’t knock her opponent out of the race, redistricting did.

Why do some "journalists" think the only candidates worth covering are those deemed certain to win? Journalists are not pollsters. Ur job is not to place bets on candidates & brag about being "right". It's to cover issues and races and help voters make decisions in a democracy.
This is true and we’ve written stories on races when they didn’t look even close, just because there was something newsworthy there.
My comment is absolutely not directed at the Intercept. Ur election coverage has been fantastic & a great public resource. But majority of journos, like @CahnEmily, operate as tho the job is 2 predict winners. Hence the hand-wringing over having "missed" AOC upset.
