This whole 'abolishing ICE' debate is incredibly frustrating. Nobody genuinely believes there should be zero enforcement of immigration laws and effectively no borders. So 'abolition' basically boils down to curtailing ICE's dickishness and renaming it. Which is disingenuous.

That's ridiculous. ICE was created in 2003. It most certainly *can* be abolished, and it should be.
-
it was created in '03 to replace the INS which enforced immigration laws. We can abolish enforcement agencies 10 times & rebrand them but their mandate remains- enforcing the laws. Abolishing is the equivalent of yelling at the faucet b/c the water company turned off your water.

Keep in mind that institutional culture is a real thing. It has gone malignant at ICE and when that happens, the best solution is to end it and disperse its various responsibilities elsewhere. It’s a rogue agency.
-
But again, what you're saying isn't akin to the 'abolish the IRS' crowd on the right insofar as they mean cut taxes. If abolishing ICE means dispersing a concentrated malignancy, you still have to deal with the malignancy acting out in the agencies that resume its mandate.
-
That misunderstands the role of institutional culture

“She was out early calling to “abolish ICE,” which many feel has become a brutal, unchecked agency with little oversight.” ...where’s everyone been? Ever heard of the DOD?
