did you work as a server because you had to or was this a Paul Ryan summer job/ "don't *want* to depend on my parents" thing?

-
Had to, but it shouldn’t matter
-
of course it matters if you experience the existential dread of being poor or if you're cosplaying like 90% of journalists who are usually from middle and upper class families because poor people can't afford the job
-
well I was raised by a single mom who did low wage work, we were poor even among other poor people, if it makes you feel better
-
I didn't ask for specifics, though I find it pretty amazing that a supposedly progressive journalist from a poor background finds it offensive that other poor people are interested in the socio-economic background of successful journalists – if it makes you feel better
-
sorry just cranky
-
I didn’t read it as interest, I read it as an assumption. Which, given the stats, was actually a reasonable assumption. So apologies for being rude about it

Pretty sure that that work time would have been subject to standard minimum wage under the law. (of course that doesn't mean the restaurant would have followed it)

Employer is supposed to pay normal minimum wage if those side duties exceed 20% of your time, per DOL.pic.twitter.com/4JOtiQ0ezp

Yeah but it’s close: an hour of a 5 hour shift would be 20%.

What I mean is the law is BS and never followed.

I never looked at it that way, because for 90% of the time I was making way more money than I did punching a register at the Rite-Aide.
-
Yup. Servers make waaaaaay more money than people working minimum wage jobs. It ain’t even close

Oh please. As someone that’s worked in the restaurant business for two decades, I can assure you that servers make damn good money at any reasonably busy restaurant
-
Yeah, they're really swimming in dough nationwide

-
Servers and reasonably busy restaurants make significantly more than minimum wage. It’s a simple fact
-
What is "damn good money?" How's the schedule? The home life? The benefits?
-
The initial tweet is in reference to paying them minimum wage for work that isn’t tipped like “filling salt shakers”.....but they make well over minimum wage if they’re any good at their job. Simple fact from decades of experience
-
How do you make well over minimum wage if you are doing work that does not get tipped?
-
If they work a 6 hour shift and mike $100....yet 1 of those hours is spent on side work......they’re still making over minimum wage. Are you asking me how math works?
-
That hour they made $2.13.
