What’s the excuse gonna be if she loses? That the dems steamrolled her?

Don't be fooled, unseating incumbents, especially entrenched party bosses, is no easy thing, and rarely done on the first try.
-
So it is a shadowy outside force pushing their weight in favor of one candidate instead of just that New Yorkers rejected her?

Only 14% of registered New York City Democrats voted in the 2017. If, like Joe Crowley, you have a lot of people counting on the gravy train continuing, it's pretty easy to turn them out.https://www.timeout.com/newyork/blog/nyc-had-an-abysmally-low-voter-turnout-in-tuesdays-primary-election-091317 …

If Alexandria can get all her voters out, it's not a foregone conclusion that she can win.
-
Not sure whether you're arguing she can, or can't. Part of the beauty of super-low turnout race is it doesn't take many actual votes for an upset.

She may not win in 2018, but if she runs again in 2020 Crowley is toast.
-
I worry the DCCC would push a milquetoast “progressive” to split her vote.
-
Has the DCCC ever used that tactic to protect an incumbent?
-
Not really, because the incumbency advantage in a primary is pretty big. There's no reason to waste money on something like that.
