If @repjoecrowley says he didn't say it - point blank, no qualifications - I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. I would for you, too. @theintercept and @ryangrim should clarify. They're reported as "he said" direct quotes. I personally that's ethically problematic.

How do you grapple with what the host of the event said?

The host did not directly quote Crowley, according to the story, as it's published now. There is no source for this: “I can’t help that I was born white,” Crowley said. You just state it. It needs some clarification as written. Surely, Crowley's direct denial should be at top.

I agree with Crowley’s spokesperson that this is a concocted story to tear down Joe. Furthermore his opponent is a Berner which may explain why
@theintercept would pounce! Damn, Ryan Grim used to be the best writer. What a shame

Let’s pretend he didn’t say it that night. Crowley’s office connected me with the event host, a Crowley supporter, who said that he HAD made comments just like that in the past. So how is that any different? And he is also on record.

Because the host didn’t remember what he said and furthermore didn’t believe that he had ever said anything “bad” previously. You are making something out of nothing which is not like you (at least in the past) It shouldn’t be a “white guy” thing for him. That’s crazy

Honestly, if you don't have a recording and are saying - unqualified - "he said" - without even including Crowley denial - it makes the whole story much less believable, and far less relevant as news.

Tom - look closer at the story. Right above it the sources are noted, it’s quite clear, and the next sentence includes more source details:pic.twitter.com/Oy0wHo3ptp

I'm just not totally buying the direct quotes at this point. Did both sources use the exact same words? And how come Crowley's direct denial isn't right there? He made it yesterday. No doubt there's a culture clash, generational aspect too. But I'm troubled by the account.
