It’s not a matter of taste to have no time for fantasy/SF. You’re just a snob.

Even spicier take: calling it magical realism/specualtive fiction as something entirely distincy from SF&F further solidifies the false notion of the Sci Fi Ghetto that Sci Fi and Fantasy are pulp genres with no redeeming works in them.

If you want to know what a book is really like, START IN THE MIDDLE. Open to a random page, read a few pages. The author has got a run up, and you get a truer indication of what the writing is really like. It doesn't spoil anything as you've got no context. Has never failed me.

There’s an actual thing about that. It’s called the page 108 theory or something. If you read page 108 it will tell you everything you need to know before buy a book without spoiling it. Might be page 120.
