A nurse by trade, Marie Van Brittan Brown’s work schedule and that of her husband led her to invent what became the precursor to today’s home security systems. She was often at home alone at night in a neighborhood with high crime rates.

Brown’s invention started as four peepholes in a door and evolved into a closed-circuit TV surveillance system with a two-way microphone that could alert local authorities at the press of a button. The invention eventually led to modern home security systems and smart doorbells.
