I’m in a very rural area near the junction of counties A, B, and C. I’m in A. We lost our ambulance service, so ambulance in C is filling in. If I use a cell phone to call 911, it’s answered in B. And no, they don’t talk to each other. Faster to drive myself or die.

Are rural hospitals closing because of fewer patients or fewer patients that have insurance? If so, wouldn’t national health insurance make sense? It might give those rural hospitals a chance, and also keep small towns alive and vital

Too few patients. There are not enough people living there to sustain the cost of keeping them open. In order for them to stay open, the state will have to take over their care. Also: too few doctors and other practitioners. Few young doctors don’t want to move to rural areas.

I think the fundamental problem is that we expect hospitals to be profit makeing and that’s had for small rural hospitals. Society needs to financially support small hospitals or they we continue to close.
