They're pretty important in languages without a garbage collector (Rust didn't invent the concept).

I understand their necessity and their function. I just wanted to say that I'm not a huge fan of the syntax and understanding them isn't very easy

We tried to find a better syntax and failed, FWIW. Nobody thinks it’s excellent but it’s the best we could come up with.

Yeah, I'm really not trying to be negative, I think it's about as good as it can be (or at least I don't have any better ideas). My only issue is that lifetimes look like generics, but
