I mean "good 2d drawing" is pretty broad, no idea what you're trying to achieve. I do know that most 3d layers allow rendering to a texture.

You can then pass that texture buffer as a &[u8] to the image crate to output it as a file in the format of your choosing.

Due to familiarity I'd used gfx if I were to do this, but anything that allows for render to texture would work.

2d is just 3d with z=0, or it can be done as 3d with an orthographic projection.

I'm mostly working lower level than that so I may not be the best source of advice, "render to texture" is the feature you need though.

I’ve mostly been getting by with the image crate alone and drawing pixel by pixel, but things other than rects are a little tricky, haha.
