@rustlang Rust noob here! 👋 Going through the Rust book it states Rust doesn’t have a null value while still talking about the unit value representing nothing. What’s the difference?

The unit `()` represents "nothing" as in "zero bytes of memory" although it technically has an address. This type of type is called ZST (Zero Sized Type) and can be used for enforcing certain rules at compile-time with e.g. traits. (I mean a custom ZST like an empy struct)

Does every unit in a program refer to the exact same address for its non-data or are there multiple different ZSTs in the memory map?

i asked people in the rust community discord, someone came up with this: `let address = &*Box::new(()) as *const () as usize;` (returns a pointer to () ) `address` turns out to be 1

types are a compile time concept, so different ZSTs are different. But they don’t exist at runtime. Some structures will set pointers to an address, but it’s not a valid one for anything

          Replying to @rustlang @DasEtwas_ and

Generally (but not always) the value of a reference to a ZST, if you convert it to a usize, will be the alignment of the type, which is generally (but not always) 1.
