So @discordapp is, as a closed platform with no API for third party clients, obviously a pretty poor platform for open source project collaboration. How do we convince the broader @rustlang community to switch to something totally open, like @matrixdotorg?
Slack was actually more hostile for our use case; it had no real moderation tooling.

Anyway, we love open source but are not hardline about it: we use GitHub and YouTube and Twitter too. Things are evaluated on a number of criteria. Discord is not perfect but they fit the best.

I'm also not an open source hardliner; open *access* seems pretty critical. GitHub and Slack, for example, have comprehensives APIs that they encourage you to use. I (and others I know) would like to collaborate more closely with Rust folks, but Discord makes that a challenge.
