Reading C++ code is so demanding to me, there's /so much/ prerequisite knowledge, so much syntax, so many opportunities to introduce subtle bugs. Even with a solid test suite I could never feel confident C++ code is doing what it should.

Things that seemed unfamiliar in rust at first ended up being either - really convenient (e.g. fn, i32, etc. are short to write, traits are great) - incredibly useful (lifetimes / borrow rules / etc.) now, when I'm using other languages I really feel.. naked.

Let's turn this thread into something useful: 👏 what's one thing you find confusing/hard to grasp about #rustlang? I'll try to do a write-up on each. 🦀

My biggest confusion is how the module system maps to files - it's clear that there is *some* kind of convention, but none of the books go into it, they just handwave around it

It also doesn't help that Rust apparently changed the module system rules some in 2019 so you're never sure what version blogs are talking about

This took me forever too!! Luckily the "2018 edition" rules are much nicer, and there's really no reason to use anything else at this point. A good candidate for a post, for sure.

Put mod a in file http://a.rs  or in a/mod.rs Put mod a::b in a/b.rs or a/b/mod.rs Add "mod" statements to your crate root to get them compiled. The Book's module section is one of the few big misses for me, I just want to know how to put my code in multiple files!

It's such an important omission! Like, you literally cannot use Rust at all without understanding this bit

Modules is definitely what stopped my first foray into rust, I just ragequit. Then I somewhat guessed my way through the next two weeks, before the "ah-AH!" moment

I do wish it was explained in a way that's more in keeping with what people actually want to know when they start out.

We re-wrote that chapter like five times over the book’s history. It seems like different things make sense to different people :/

I think the existing information there is good! It just needs more about the filesystem

Yes I say what people want to know but that's just what I wanted to know... Personally I'd rather know about modules in files first.
