I don't think it's about open Vs closed source. It's in the post: maintaining things costs and Mozilla has to wisely use their limited resources. A free but closed source solution helps with this. I think we all agree: would be better if it was open source. But maintenance costs.

There seems to be an assumption here that open source == self hosted. Matrix, Zulip, etc depend on $ from managed paid hosting to fund dev (e.g. http://Modular.im hosting funds Matrix). There is no need for Moz or Rust or anyone to run or wrap their own if they don't want.
