First ding against @rustlang I've realised today: Rust makes you do quite a bit of "write code a specific way so the compiler can see what you see", which is not always a) obvious or b) the most clear way you can write said code.

There will be less of that when non-lexical lifetimes are a thing. But yeah, lifetimes and checked borrows will do that. A good thing about that: by having to express that info. to the compiler, you’re also expressing it to other devs., not relying on implicit conventions.
