Unfortunate that #rustlang wasn't production ready when Bitcoin Core was initially released. Maintaining a C++ project means a lot of brainpower is spent on writing code/annotations that should be supported by the language/compiler out of the box.

Why isn’t @rustlang ready for production? C++ has most of the benefits of Rust, but in a non-type-safe (or concept-unchecked) manner. Nobody reads Alexander Stepanov, so nobody can create regular types and generic algorithms for themselves in C++. Read Elements of Programming...

It's not possible to compile Rust code, without trusting a third-party Rust compiler binary. There is only one Rust compiler, and it is itself written in Rust, so a recursive backdoor cannot be ruled out.

There is a second compiler, written in C, that got a bit-reproducible build of the main compiler. mrustc

Tried that about 6 months ago and couldn't get it to do anything useful. I hear it also has portability issues (ie, only works on backdoored/x86 systems)

The point is to use it to bootstrap, not as a general purpose thing. Or to take its results as part of that risk calculation about trusting trust.

Bootstrapping is all I was trying to use it for (and it didn't succeed). Shouldn't need to bootstrap on backdoored hardware either, so portability should be fixed.

As nitpicky as @LukeDashjr is being on this point, remember that the prize for a successful backdoor into this class of software measures in the tens of billions of dollars. Would love to see @rustlang able to bootstrap from open-source hardware+software.
