All new forms of entertainment/technology come with some form of moral panic, but the smartphone revolution is the first where we're never not connected it or close to the tech.

Phones are intently social, so even when there's nothing to do on your phone the desire to remain connected and remain social keeps you from putting the phone down.

It's difficult to make broad generalizations about how people use their phones. Too many apps and use cases. Google's research into the "emotional feedback loop" resulted in the awareness-based system so people can create limits themselves.

Google is very open about these tools not being a cure for anything, but tools to encourage awareness and create a feeling of control that otherwise might not have been there. This is also barely phase one, because people will trick themselves into workarounds.

There are also cultural differences Google is exploring. Some parts of the world you answer the phone as soon as it rings no matter what, but not the case everywhere.
