Because it's so loud when I cook, I usually rely on my bone conduction headphones. Volume isn't a problem with those. Same for when I'm running outside. I need to be able to hear the stuff around me, so I use those.

Like Russell, I use headphones in the kitchen primarily. My wife has issues w noise; prefers quiet. When I cook or clean, a speaker would disturb her. Know b/c I've tried. Headphones are courteous, and I use running headphones that have gap to let in sound around me too.

But I also know I'm unusually non-tech when it comes to home audio. I've never owned a sound system, never had a stereo. My TV speakers are my only speakers. I've never spent the money, because most of my time is spent in headphones or at my PC.
