First of all, not everyone is able to skip a paycheck (or two or three) in their budget and be OK. Even if they can, it's still an understandable source of anxiety right after holiday spending.

But the real reason it misses the point, in my opinion, is the work itself. There are TONS of "government" jobs occupied by people who are genuinely passionate about the work they do, It's not about collecting a paycheck for them so much as it is about seeing their projects idle,

So please, before you roll your eyes at that friend who is upset about being furloughed during this shutdown, try to keep in mind this is far from being a vacation for a lot of them and this frustration they are experiences is likely not at all politically motivated.

Also, don’t forget that with all the screams for “small government” a lot of what would be fed jobs are held by contractors who won’t get that back pay.

Contractors usually aren't paid at all. I worked for 20-ish days for free in 1995, along with about 500,000 other people.
