Time to talk about what future headsets might look like. Oculus does a lot of prototyping, but there are often software/cost things to consider.

Putting the battery in the back isn’t great for a couple of reasons, tracking using the current tech is going to get better over time. Splitting displays for movement gives you more options for IPD and other things. OLED vs LCD is a constant conversation

Technically the Rift S can run at 90fps but there’s some temperature sensitivity. Quest display is rated for 72 but future versions could easily do 90

Higher resolution displays are a target, creating environments dense enough for the video to be 1080 when playing on a VR theater

Carmack is currently very happy with the current audio capabilities of the headsets, and headphone jacks aren’t going anywhere. Bluetooth headsets are being revisited, because tech has improved.

Why using “outdated” SOCs on Go and Quest? Using things that aren’t bleeding edge was easier before. Current team is great, next system will likely have a much close to modern SOC. Likely made by Qualcomm, because of the current relationship strength.

Computer vision tech is going to get much better quickly thanks to new tech on the SOC. RAM has been a proven issue with this generation. As multitasking is supported, memory handling will be more aggressive.

Supporting usb accessories is important, but power consumption even for simple things has been surprising.

Hand tracking and controller tracking are actually an either/or system right now because explosives are so different. Can’t track both at the same time, something Carmack wants to address moving forward.
