Quest is by far the most retentive hardware, folks use it a lot and stay in it way longer. This tiny, underpowered system does some incredible things. It’s possible initial Rift minimum spec wasn’t aggressive enough, could have increased initial adoption. #OC6
Oculus Link has been the dream for Carmack over the last six years, a stand-alone system you could make more capable by connecting a PC. The limitations are clear, but it’s a huge first step. Would eventually want to try WiFi tethered Link, but nothing to announce. #OC6
Remote rendering on Quest could be better is Qualcomm would allow Oculus to access the Venus processor directly instead of working with so many layers. With that, Quest could actually outperform Motion to Photon latency on Rift S because OLED vs LCD #OC6
Carmack believes this is the best remote rendering system for this kind of experience by far, which I mean of course he would. #OC6
And now Carmack is talking about the Gear VR, which I covered earlier in the thread. Carmack couldn’t get permission to talk sales/shipping figures but it’s a huge number. Unfortunately retention was super low. #OC6
Lots of people basically only used the headset twice. Carmack admits Daydream was a better onboard experience. Laments the lack of case support. #OC6
Also not thrilled about the status of content creation through VR cameras, things have been stagnant there for a while. #OC6
What if you just ran a cable from a better headset to a phone? Carmack says it causes a lot of other problems. Prefers the lighter headsets you could wear for a long time. #OC6
Go apps on Quest is happening slowly because there’s a lot of problems with full support. Carmack would like to eventually support all VR apps so there’s an archive of those experiences. #OC6
There’s a line between beautiful immersion and frenetic aggression in VR, and current messaging doesn’t describe both well. SuperHot isn’t about immersion so much as it is feeling like a badass #OC6
Designing for larger spaces isn’t a priority because most people don’t have the space for it. Average sizes for people are not great, and justifying that it building games is usually not worth it. #OC6
Carmack wants devs to hire voice actors, because voice actors make every expertise better. COULD NOT AGREE MORE #OC6
Be aggressive with haptics, if it matters you need to get people’s attention.
Make load times less terrible.
#OC6
Give people something to buy, even if it’s just a soundtrack or simple add-on. People who want to support you will do so at launch if they like your work. #OC6
Carmack supports a less curated experience on Quest, but gets both arguments. He sees building to Go as a sort of Back door to getting your stuff on Quest. #OC6
DOWNLOADED MOVIES ARE COMING BACK TO OCULUS QUEST... eventually. #OC6
Google Stadia for Oculus? Carmack days game streaming for VR headsets feels inevitable, buy nothing anywhere near ready right now. #OC6
Half of Quest users have 40mb streaming, and many have more. Carmack thinks aiming for 10-15 mb for quality is a disservice. There’s room to push more to the headsets. #OC6
Carmack wants a more immersive web experience, but doesn’t want to upset web standards people. #OC6
Social VR is a mess. Oculus Rooms is on the way out, Horizons will take a while to grow. Lots of iteration, little cohesion. #OC6
Casting has improved dramatically, but there’s more things happening here. Possible streaming to browsers and miracast, maybe even streaming to a tethered screen when WiFi isn’t a thing. #OC6
Deep linking is going to make it possible to drop people into the best parts of VR experiences, which is going to be exciting. #OC6
Virtual meetings is a thing Oculus is working on internally, because there are no good remote conferencing things. But that doesn’t mean everyone lives in the headset at work #OC6
Local file management on Quest it’s a problem, barely works. Carmack wants to fix it. #OC6
Everyone needs to submit feedback to Oculus and vote for big issues. That data is important, don’t just cry on Twitter. User voice is your friend. Bookmark https://oculus.uservoice.com/
Time to talk about what future headsets might look like. Oculus does a lot of prototyping, but there are often software/cost things to consider. #OC6
Putting the battery in the back isn’t great for a couple of reasons, tracking using the current tech is going to get better over time. Splitting displays for movement gives you more options for IPD and other things. OLED vs LCD is a constant conversation #OC6
Technically the Rift S can run at 90fps but there’s some temperature sensitivity. Quest display is rated for 72 but future versions could easily do 90 #OC6
Higher resolution displays are a target, creating environments dense enough for the video to be 1080 when playing on a VR theater #OC6
Carmack is currently very happy with the current audio capabilities of the headsets, and headphone jacks aren’t going anywhere. Bluetooth headsets are being revisited, because tech has improved. #OC6
