I don't know, it depends. My Fitbit Flex 2 is pretty good on sleep tracking. Not perfect but solid.

But that's the thing, right? Apple wants to be able to use it to tie in to the other medical-grade stuff it's doing. Needs to be rock solid.

Not true, I have the Withings watch and sleep tracking its absolutelly perfect. I was waiting only for that in the new apple watch, Im not going to buy the new one, nothing new.

I don’t know if I totally agree with that. I find the Fitbit ones to be pretty good (not perfect, no). But for basic, meta data, works pretty well.
