My sister bought a new phone this week. Not a techy lady, doesn't like bothering me about purchases. Wasn't thrilled with her iPhone X, decided to try something else. She figured because her Airpods worked on Android phones that her Apple Watch would as well. Now she's stuck.

Apple doesn't owe Android users anything, but the Watch is straight up the only reason I pick up my iPhone X most days. It's easy to say "Apple should support X" but I honestly wonder if it would lose customers on the phone side if users could take the Watch elsewhere.

Does the new watchOS completely remove dependence on iPhone or just partially?

Partially. It's great for going out on a run, but not a totally independent thing
