Android will soon support digital IDs, covering everything from driver's licenses to travel docs to club membership cards. It's not coming right away, there's more to do, but it IS coming. #io19

But who will accept it as a valid form of ID

Unclear to me! It appears to be written to meet existing standards. I'm unfamiliar with the digital docs space (for now) so I have a lot of catching up to do.

Existing standards for ........ digital forms of identification in physical spaces? I didn’t know there were standards for that.

      Looks like it's an ISO standard?https://security.googleblog.com/2019/05/whats-new-in-android-q-security.html …

Weird though that it only talks about cryptography standards but not how the in-person assessment of validity works. I’ll stay tuned to further details tho

That's a great point! I assume there will have to be some kind of scanable element for verification. The emphasis on travel docs also makes this seem a bit limited. We'll see!

I talked to a couple people on that team as well, they said a big limitation right now is the lack of unified regulatory definition. Being able to use your phone as your ID even when the phone is completely dead is on the list of things they want to tackle though.

Wut? I don’t think I would EVER want my phone to be able to identify me/my personal info as it’s owner if it is powered off!!!! No way! The “remote wipe” option is necessary for a reason.

Yeah they weren't excited about answering any of my follow-ups when that got mentioned, because it's all hypothetical right now. But I agree, it's murky at best.

This is the shit that annoys me about builders though. They’re going to forge ahead and build the thing without ANY acknowledgement of the real world implications! Like, wtf!
