Rob Giusti is talking about how trainer battles were added to @PokemonGoApp, and what went into that designpic.twitter.com/ki0R0dNW7M

Niantic was hoping Trainer Battles would not only bring existing players back to the game, but grow the userbase to people who were more interested in PVP.

This was specifically not a monetized feature. No extra items needed for combat, everyone gets something out of a battle. Trainer Battles are all about expanding the things for existing people to enjoy.

Launch window for Trainer Battles was intentional. Niantic wanted the feature to be rock solid in time for the next Go Fest #PokemonGO

Niantic hoped to simultaneously attract lapsed, casual, and hardcore players with this system. From my experience, this was successful effort. Local Community Day events not only have more people, but are significantly more interactive.

This is super interesting, #PokemonGO uses the NPC Battles instead of a traditional tutorial system because of how many people just skip through that kind of thing on phones. Endless NPC Battles means more people can explore at their own pace and develop strategy themselves

In the end, Trainer Battles was a huge success for #PokemonGO. Tons of people came back to the game and players continue to love the feature.
