One is a visual problem that has a relatively minimal effect on how you see content on your phone; the other is a physical issue with the display that is in the dead center of the device no matter what. I’d say those are on different levels of importance.

Nope, they're the exact same kind of terrible.

As opposed to a notch in the middle that limits how wide your notifications can be? It’s all compromises, the question is which one you personally are willing to make.

You lose a lot less with a teardrop notch, and gain symmetry, but yes I would prefer none of them. We don't need any of these compromises. They're all bad.

Who said a hole\notch was ok?

So many bloggers are totally cool with both now.

Both are awful. But I get told I'm being "too picky" about the s10 and the hole. I guess caring about UI symmetry is a sin these days but the other isn't

With the notch you're not losing anything. You're gaining screen real estate on the top edge (which can be disabled) What really grinds my gears is that because of notches they limited notification space on phones without a notch

It's not for "no good reason" ... it's because there's a hole in the display ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Imagine the notifications at the regular location with a hole in the middle - Let’s start with this.
