I was on Worker's Comp for over two years in an attempt to fix my arm. Multiple surgeries, months of physical therapy, all of it with me stuck at home only collecting a partial paycheck. Depression does not adequately describe the darkness I lived in.

I gained a ridiculous amount of weight, was miserable to just about everyone in my life, and didn't see a path forward for my family. The only thing I looked forward to most days was this CyanogenMod IRC channel full of nerds. Playing with my phone gave me something to do.

Watching the way people interacted with this OS was fun, and gave me something to do.
@CasianH got me a microphone so I could more easily get my thoughts out with some speech to text software. It turned out, there were people who liked what I was saying, and asked for more.Show this thread -
A couple of years and a lot of physical therapy later, I had re-taught myself how to type without the ring and pinky finger of my right hand. The same week my previous employer said they didn't want me back, I got my first real fulltime writing gig. I was the Google Glass nerd.pic.twitter.com/3Iz5X9HZyP

I've not been particularly shy about what my life has been like the last couple of years. And this year is going to be more of the same, with some additional physical and emotional changes on the way.https://www.twitter.com/russellholly/status/1018612596579209217 …

This scar isn't ever going away, but I stopped seeing it as a negative thing a long time ago. There's still pain, and I'll never fully recover from the loss of control in those fingers, but it's ok. That fall changed my life for the better, it just took me a while to get there.pic.twitter.com/vidFiUervE

Thank you for sharing man. Your transformation has been really amazing to follow. Truly admire your work and sorry to hear about the accident that changed your life...I recently ate it ice skating and now my wrist is all jacked up.. It's been about a month and a half of pain.

Please go get it checked out, if you haven't already!

Bud, we should sit & compare scar stories someday. I know the struggle of both fighting that darkness & dealing with the scars that won't go away (seen & unseen). Can sympathize a lot with your story, dude. You're doing great.

I'm a fan of this plan. And thank you
