I had nearly exactly the same experience with my first off road bike race, I was on a 20 year old bike with no shocks and had multiple people tell me there was no chance I'd do it. Makes it so much more satisfying to cross the finish line.
I hate people. That's like people who think they need the best of the best camera to be a good photographer. Its just a tool, it's the person using it that matters. Good luck Russell, kick some ass today!
