Pixel 2 has a great single camera, amazing HDR and segmentation masking, but no real depth. Blur/color a little sciencey and cold, but many like it. iPhone X/S has dual cams, gets real depth data, warmer more artistic color/blur, but still catching up on segmentation and HDR.https://twitter.com/speedmaster/status/1042384040299511808 …

No real depth? I have taken some real great shots with solid real bokah on my Pixel 2

Pixel only has one camera, so it can only get minimal parallax by hijacking the Focus Pixels. What you’re seeing is the miracle of Google’s segmentation masking. (From Pixel cam doesn’t even have Focus Pixels.) Regardless, all “portrait mode” bokeh is simulated, not real :)

Those focus pixels seem to do the same work as dual lenses, though. Check out the depth map athttps://ai.googleblog.com/2017/10/portrait-mode-on-pixel-2-and-pixel-2-xl.html …

They really don’t. Apple is using them on iPhone XR and there’re better than nothing but the parallax they pull is significantly less than what a dual camera can.

Looking at the depth map, it looks about as good as any 3D sensor could be. The rest is software. Perhaps iOS on the iPhone XS has better software blur, but I honestly don't think it's a limitation in hardware. Pixel 2 has consistently outdone dual-lens cameras with portrait mode

this. Dying on the hill of physical hw is a losing battle. The pixel has already proven this and in most scenarios it leads the market. The only time the single lens hurts it is if you zoom into zoomed shots you'll see degradation sooner than dual lens images

Or if you want to provide developers with a depth API for more than just photographs... You are right that perspective taking is super hard. Sadly.

Google being able to use software to accomplish what the Pixel 2 does is damned impressive. Real-time depth data developers can take advantage of is not only way easier with hardware, but frees up processor/gpu cycles for those developers to do more Long term, dual-lens is good
