This shows your usage though, when you’re presumably socially distancing? It’s not an accurate reflection of it trying to handshake while out and about or even in a high-rise.

The trial in RAF base in Yorkshire & ongoing trial with >100k ppl in IoW will be providing evidence on this. Lots of the current speculation could be replaced by better evidence if govt published reports from those trials

Because it makes active handshakes, the big question that I have not seen anyone address is how it behaves in large of people such as a street, not when no one around you has the app yet.

Yes, the better test would be to install it on a bunch of phones, and rig it up so one is constantly moving in and out of range of the others. Phone on a model train track, anyone?

Ridiculous comparison. Contrast to other background activity apps if you want but all this shows is you use Twitter a lot

In fairness, it’s hard to get a grasp on battery performance until the app gets a bit busier and is frequently establishing connections with other devices.

BT LE is very power efficient and is designed to run on devices powered by coin cell batteries. Think small BT LE beacon devices. These can run for months. It’s when it starts making connections and the devices start actively communicating that will bump up power consumption.

this Tweet is so naive. It’s whilst you’re socially distancing -not whilst you’re out & about. Report back when it’s interacting with loads of phones (with the app) around you or you live in a large block of flats. Come on, I expect more from a tech journo. This is basic stuffThanks. That might just be telling you that’s it’s being shut down and not working

If you’re not somewhere with quite a lot of other people using the app (especially on iOS) surely it will use nothing like the battery it otherwise would? Plus of course it’ll depend on how much you’re otherwise using the phone…
