10% a week? I guess that must be some magic rule? If so, I keep my calculator in my pocket. Don't get trapped by numbers. Intermediate 2 is designed as a pretty tough program for runners who can handle the build-up.https://twitter.com/RisaLovesSports/status/979341963022553090 …

@higdonmarathon Am following your Intermediate 2 plan. Noticed the build is a bit more than 10% per week. What’s the reason? Looking to learn more. Thx!

Two questions in response to your simple but effective answer: 1 - why are all training plans done by week when a week is merely a manmade invention of time, and 2 - is there actually any science based behind the 10% rule.

I know you want Hal’s response, and hope you’ll get it. But I’d bet the 10% is experience-based, more than science-based. As far as the man made week, I can’t imagine why you can’t make a 5 or 8 day calendar. A week is convenient, to extent we can coordinate w/other life events.

And secondly. The 10% rule ignores probably far more important factors, such as amount of sleep and rest, what other recovery the athlete is doing or cross-training and quality/quanity of other stresses. Yet 10% (and the week) seem entirely arbitrary figures.

To be honest, I don't or at least largely try not to! But the 10% rule seems an oddly arbitrary figure (and potentially myth) to all runners, when I'm struggling to see what science it's based on.
