As a runner who lives in a wilderness area, I have always had to be conscious of the wildlife I might encounter, including coyotes. There are many reasons the coyote might be aggressive, but to suggest it is "targeting runners" is unnecessary vilification.

Runners invading their wilderness. Shouldn’t be dealt with in any violent fashion. Coyotes can’t go anywhere. When they come to the suburbs there killed. Just leave them alone. Beautiful creatures
