The California State Senate has approved a measure that will provide universal basic income for youth coming out of the foster care system. Huge thanks to San Francisco District Attorney @chesaboudin!https://www.davisvanguard.org/2021/06/sf-da-applauds-ca-senate-ok-of-youth-basic-income-plan-champions-other-youth-programs/ …

The pilot project runs 1/1/22 - 12/31/25. A CA resident who ages out program at 21 yo during 2022, regardless of what age they entered shall be eligible for the program & receive UBI of $1k/mo for 3 years. All for helping folks get on their feet, but what are we doing…

… beyond this to help them learn to manage money & train them for job & life skills so they can become self-sufficient once the UBI program ends? If the answer is nothing, this is half-baked & not helpful.

$ pays for rent, sliding scale therapy, maybe a quick, cheap bite out now & then. This is super helpful for many actually!

Short-term, yes, & I’m happy for that. I’m asking, what happens when the money runs out if they haven’t been supported in other programs to learn life skills & become self-sufficient? If folks have become dependent on the stipend & then fall on hard times subsequently wo it.
