'A Foggy Day' was written by Gershwin for a 1937 film and has been recorded by some of the greatest singers of our times - but it's through Judy Garland that Rufus Wainwright got to know the song and decided to create his own version of it.

Mapplethorpe’s images are full of love and truth in my opinion, his truth and love were a homosexual one which was incredibly radical to put into pictures that openly and Hadrian’s true love was a homosexual one as well even though it was not accepted at the time either.

Hadrian’s love Antinoos died under unknown circumstances in the Nile in Egypt and Hadrian is driven to find out what happens at all costs. Sometimes truth can be destructive yet we still search for it all the time.

As we continue our journey through love and loss, Mapplethorpe's images of the body, and the juxtaposition of the hard and soft lines we see here collide with the emotional turmoil the characters are going through in the opera. Do I stand here before you? Have I a spirit become?
